Qatar Airways recently unveiled striking new branding at London Heathrow Airport, located on the Terminal 4 roundabout. The centrepiece features a 9-meter-long scaled model of a Boeing 777-9 aircraft, installed above a 12-meter LED screen. The screen promotes the airline’s services, global destinations, and latest campaigns.
To complete the visual impact, our client wanted the model aircraft illuminated at night. The goal was to complement the digital advertising display without disrupting the surrounding airport environment.
During our initial site visit, we identified several challenges:
First, we needed to prevent light pollution.
Next, we managed beam angles carefully to avoid interference with airspace.
We also had to avoid obstructing CCTV cameras.
Finally, minimising light spill toward nearby hotels and facilities was essential.
Therefore, we brought test lighting kits to the site to assess beam angles, colour temperature, and placement. These trials helped us determine the exact number of ground-mounted luminaires needed to achieve even illumination across the aircraft.
After delivering the kit, our technical engineers managed the on-site setup. They adjusted brightness, angle, and coverage for each fixture. Additionally, we supplied DMX control boxes with every unit. Each fixture connected to an IP-managed timer, automating the lighting schedule according to daylight hours.
Moreover, to improve the aesthetics and functionality of the installation, our in-house engineering team designed and manufactured bespoke snoots. These snoots were customised in height to:
Prevent light bleed,
Reduce glare, and
Maintain a clean visual finish.
In the end, the result is a dramatically lit aircraft model that enhances Qatar Airways’ branding while respecting the technical and environmental constraints of a busy international airport.
